Athens Georgia Shopping
Downtown Athens houses an eclectic mix of specialty shops, art galleries, and eateries, many in restored, Victorian-era buildings. Music lovers gravitate at downtown stores like Wuxtry, LoYoYo Stuff, and Schoolkids Records. Junkman's Daughter's Brother, on Clayton Street, likely has something for the person who has everything, from combat boots and incense to insect-eating plants. Dixon’s Bicycles, on Baxter Street, rents bikes. One-of-a-kinds are plentiful both downtown and in the Five Points district, where merchants and a thriving arts community bring creativity to the Athens market. Other hot retail areas include Colonial Beechwood Promenade on Alps Road. Georgia Square Mall, anchored by Belk, Macy's, JCPenney, and Sears, has more than 115 retail shops on the west side of town, off Atlanta Highway.
The Athens Antique Mall beckons with dealers on the west side near Georgia Square Mall and Sam's Club. Antiquities are also plentiful on Prince Avenue in Normaltown. Athens dining ranges from fine to funky, with vegetarian favorites including The Bluebird, at the corner of Clayton and Thomas streets, and The Grit, on Prince Avenue near downtown. Weaver D’s Fine Foods, on Broad Street just before the river, tantalizes with barbeque, fried chicken, and Dexter Weaver's squash casserole, proclaimed as pure heaven on a plate. Downtown's Welcome Center, on the corner of Thomas and Dougherty Streets, is open six days.
